Sunday afternoon after church Amanda and Kevin watched while Jeb parked his pickup in her driveway. Another man followed, backing a flatbed truck up the driveway. Both men climbed out.

Kevin was excited, looking forward to the prospect of moving to the ranch, and he raced to Jeb, who swung him up onto his shoulders easily.

A tall, black-haired, broad-shouldered man walked beside Jeb. He was rugged, slightly thicker through the shoulders and chest than Jeb, with powerful muscles. The moment she met his dark-eyed gaze, she knew he was aware of the situation and didn’t approve of her.

Kevin laughed, winding his fingers in Jeb’s thick hair. “How’s my boy?” Jeb asked.

“Fine,” Kevin answered, looking happy, and she thought how swiftly father and son had bonded.

“Amanda, this is Jake Reiner. Jake, I’ve told you about Amanda.”

“How do you do,” he said politely, and she greeted him politely in return.

“And this is Kevin, Jake. Kevin, this is Jake Reiner.” Jake shook hands with Kevin.

“Where shall we begin?” Jeb asked, ending any idle talk. For the next two hours, the men were busy carrying out her furniture. “This is the superb horse trainer you’ve told me about?”

“He’s the best. You should see him tame a wild horse. The wildest melt for him. So do most women,” Jeb added dryly.

“He doesn’t approve of me.”

Jeb shot her a curious glance and shrugged. “Jake doesn’t approve of marriage. I don’t think it’s personal. He’ll never tie himself down to marriage. Hell, he won’t tie himself to a job more than a year at a time.”

“Why not?”

“I don’t know. Besides my brothers, he’s my best friend. We’re really close, but there are some things I don’t know about him. There’s something that keeps him from sinking roots anywhere.”

“Well, this is one time when I think his dislike is personal. I still don’t think he approves of me.”

“If he doesn’t now, he will. You’re irresistible,” Jeb said with a sexy leer, and she smiled.

As soon as everything had been loaded, Amanda and Kevin rode to the ranch with the men, and Amanda supervised the unloading of the pickup and truck. It was one in the morning when Jeb drove Amanda and Kevin back to the city.

After carrying a sleeping Kevin to bed Jeb left, hearing the door close behind him.

When he returned to the ranch, he unlocked the back door and entered. He could smell her lingering perfume. Already his life was changing and his house was transformed into unfamiliar surroundings. He walked through the rooms, looking at her furniture. Emotions clashed in him: joy over the prospect of getting his son, worry over a marriage that wasn’t a union of love. Were they going to
